ROSS TOWNSHIP, Pa. — A man surrendered several hours after SWAT officers swarmed a road in Ross Township Tuesday, authorities said.

Police, firefighters and paramedics -- in addition to a SWAT team -- were called about 9 a.m. to a home on Jacks Run Road, near Connie Drive.

Officials said police initially responded to the home to conduct a welfare check when they noticed a strong smell of natural gas. Adjacent homes were evacuated as a precaution and the gas was shut off.

Authorities worked to make contact with the man who was inside the home, and he surrendered just before noon.
