PITTSBURGH — Nearly 50 animals were rescued from an area farm after a Good Samaritan alerted officials to the unsanitary, deplorable conditions they were living in.
Officers found horses, alpacas and other large animals and began seizing them when they heard noises from a corner stall. They found a pig named “Bubblegum” who was living in a tiny pen amongst her own feces and being fed junk.
The pig, who weighs about 250 pounds, had not had a hoof trim in at least five years and her hooves had fused into a single toe. An organization called the Pittsburgh Squealers Rescue helped treat Bubblegum’s injuries and trim her hooves.
The animals were taken to various rescue agencies in the area, and Humane Animal Rescue is working on securing grants to help pay for their care. The animals will remain in quarantine for two weeks before being moved to an outdoor pen.
Officials are still investigating the owner and declined to disclose where the farm is located. So far, no one has been charged.
