Two killed in 66-vehicle pileup in north-central Pennsylvania, multiple people injured

PITTSBURGH — Two people were killed and multiple people were hurt in a massive 66-vehicle pileup on Interstate 80 in north-central Pennsylvania.

According to state police, 55 commercial vehicles and 11 passenger cars were involved in the pileup in Clinton County. Troopers said that those 66 vehicles were involved in multiple crashes over a one-mile span in the westbound lanes from the I-180 interchange to the 178/Lock Haven interchange.

According to state police, one person was killed in the first crash involving two commercial vehicles and two passenger vehicles. From there, others continued to wreck -- unable to avoid the collision due to the road conditions.

Another person died from a “non-traffic” medical condition in one of the vehicles stuck in the backup.

Troopers released images from the massive pileup, and the overhead look provides a clear picture of just how devastating it was.

State police said the westbound lanes are still closed while crews work to clear the area of vehicles and debris from the incident. Heavy-duty contractors are still on I-80 removing cars and tractor-trailers.

The eastbound lanes are also being restricted so crews have room to get the disabled vehicles out of there.

Areas of Clinton County were expected to receive anywhere from 10 to 22 inches of snow and were under a Winter Storm Warning.

PennLive.com reports that the crash occurred not far from the site of a 58-vehicle crash a year ago Friday in a snow squall in which two people were killed.
