PITTSBURGH — It’s a girl! Pittsburgh’s National Aviary announced Tuesday the gender of its newest endangered African Penguin, as well as its name: Marge.
The penguin chick hatched on Jan. 3. A DNA feather test revealed that the chick is a female, as there is no way to determine the sex of a penguin just by looking.
Marge is the 11th African Penguin to hatch at the National Aviary, and the first to hatch to parents Buddy and Holly.
At almost three months old, Marge is nearing her full adult size.
A donor and board member named the penguin in honor of his mother.
For a short time, National Aviary visitors may be able to see Marge, who will make appearances in the Avian Care Center window daily from 12:30 p.m. to 2 p.m., the National Aviary said.
