PITTSBURGH — Health officials report the largest daily increase in COVID-19 positive cases in Allegheny County since the outbreak began.
The health department reports 90 more cases of coronavirus, bringing the total to 2,472 positive cases. 381 people have been hospitalized and 186 people have died.
This is an increase of nearly 30 more positive cases over Friday’s number of 61. Saturday’s numbers mark an eight day stretch that has seen coronavirus cases increase sharply in a way not seen since cases first started popping up in March.
County health officials said in a news release Friday that the cases were “overwhelmingly among younger people who were traveling, visiting bars and restaurants, and out in the community” the county said in a news release.

The cases Friday ranged in age from four months to 97 years old with an average age of 31. Two thirds of the cases were among people aged 19 to 49.
The department said in the news release that case investigators traveled all over the country, including Myrtle Beach, Houston, Nashville, and places in Florida such as Miami, Tampa and Naples.
For reference, the population of Allegheny County according to the U.S. Census Bureau is more than 1.2 million people.
The state Department of Health reported Saturday an additional 621 positive cases across Pennsylvania. That brings the statewide total to 84,991 since the outbreak began. 24 more people also died as a result of the virus, bringing the total number of deaths to 6,603.
