Latrobe Little League still recovering from April arson

LATROBE, Pa. — Nearly six weeks after an arsonist torched Latrobe Little League’s shed and all of its equipment inside — most of it has been replaced.

A new shed sits where the old one was torched and nearly every piece of the thousands of dollars worth of equipment that was lost has been replaced, thanks to insurance. The league was responsible for the deductible.

Latrobe Little League’s President John Russo watched some of the upgrades unfold here on the fields at Legion Keener Park just this week.

“Pirates charities went ahead and donated some dirt for us and made sure we got the shed, aggressive grinding came in yesterday and went ahead and leveled everything, put the dirt down,” he said. “It’s just been overwhelming, I can tell you right now a lot of people who have been sending in donations are outside of Latrobe which is crazy. We have pretty much everything back in, we loaded the shed up yesterday, so yeah; we’re going to be ready to play down here June 12th for the minors and coach pitch.”

Dicks Sporting Goods and the Pirates Charities teamed up to help the league not only get back on their feet but are adding some upgrades to the fields hundreds of kids play ball on, every season.

“People inside Latrobe and the businesses have really stepped up and helped us out: they understand last year we had no fundraisers we came in way down, and right now we’re back to where we should be,” Russo said. ““They’re supposed to be putting in new benches, those are on order, they’re 20 feet long with a back so that’s nice too.”

Latrobe Police said they still don’t have any leads or suspects in the April arson.
