College student jumps into Liberty Bridge crash wreckage to help victims

PITTSBURGH — Three people where hurt Tuesday afternoon in a several vehicle crash on the Liberty Bridge, police said.

Duquesne University student Bailey Lis was driving on the bridge when she witnessed one of the cars slam into the van around 12:30 p.m. She and several others got out to help. She ran to her car and grabbed extra clothes to help cushion the victims as the were laying on the pavement.

The victims were able to get out before the car caught on fire.

“It no one in the cars would have gotten out, they probably wouldn’t have gotten out of the car before it went up in flames so definitely the takeaway from this is just always help when you can,” Lis said.

Three adults were taken to the hospital in stable condition. A fourth person was not hurt.

The cause of the collision is still under investigation.

The bridge was shut down in both directions while crews cleared the crash. It was reopened shortly after 2 p.m.
