HOPEWELL TWP., Pa. — Police are investigating after a gun was found near a bus stop on the first day of school in the Hopewell School District.
Investigators told Channel 11 they've been working on this all day long and have a lead on the owner.
Right now, they don't believe this was a case of ill intent, but more of someone not keeping track of their weapon.
A woman out for a walk Tuesday morning found the loaded weapon along Yale Drive near the corner with Webb Street, police confirmed.
The woman who found it, who was too shaken up to share her identity, told Channel 11 she had just put her kids on the bus.
She didn't touch the gun and immediately called police. A holster was also found nearby, police said.
"We teach the kids to go to adults, we teach the adults to call us," said Brian Uhrmacher, chief of Hopewell Township police. "Luckily, it all worked out."
Nobody was hurt. Police are still working to track down the owner.
