PITTSBURGH — Local shops and national chains are both exploring new ways to get people back to work.

Fast food franchises like Burger King are offering a $1,500 sign-on bonus for new employees. Primanti Bros. is offering something similar to hire more people.

“We just are seeing tremendous demand from fans in the market and we need more players and people to serve them day in and day out,” said spokesperson Adam Golomb.

Primantis is offering $300 for hourly team members and up to $1,500 for management positions. McDonald’s is offering a $200 signing bonus for crew members. City Works is offering a $500 welcome bonus to entice people to apply.

“There are a number of companies you wouldn’t expect putting out incentives which probably fairly indicative of the lack of employees available to work right now,” said James Smith with the Westmoreland County economic growth connection.

County leaders said they believe the need for workers stems from a very high demand. Another factor, though, could be that some people have growing fears of the virus and vaccines, and are cautious about returning to the workforce.
