Look up! The Lyrid meteor shower will peak Thursday morning, April 22, but you should also be able to view some meteors Friday morning, too.
Clouds will get in the way Wednesday night into Thursday across western Pennsylvania, but try Thursday night into Friday, as the sky will be rather clear.
On a clear night, away from city lights, you could see 10 to 15 meteors per hour. The best time to view, weather-permitting, is from 9 p.m. to before dawn and you can look anywhere in the sky.
The moon will be a waxing gibbous moon throughout the period which may make it hard to see the meteors so be patient. If you want to wait until moonset to head out, you’ll have to wait awhile. The moonset in Pittsburgh on April 22 is 4:22 a.m. and the moonset on April 23 is 4:54 a.m. Sunrise is 6:31 a.m. on Thursday and 6:29 a.m. on Friday.
Again, the recommended time to view would be Thursday night into Friday morning for our area due to the weather. Happy meteor spotting!
