ROSS TOWNSHIP, Pa. — A North Versailles man was arrested early Tuesday after assaulting an officer during a traffic stop, then leading police on a chase, Ross Township police said.

A Franklin Park police officer stopped Kasey Gusty, 36, near Wexford Bayne Road around 1 a.m. on suspicion of driving while on DUI suspension.

During the stop, the officer tried to remove Gusty from the car, that’s when police said he sped off towards I-79 causing the officer to be thrown from the side of the black Honda, police said. The officer suffered minor injuries and did not need medical care.

“When they attempted to remove him he started the car and sped away, this caused one of the Franklin Park officers to be thrown from the car and to sustain some injuries, they announced over the police radio what had occurred,” said Ross Township Police Det. Sgt. Brian Kohlhepp.

A short time later, a license plate reader near Perrysville Avenue in Ross Township, picked up the car. Ross officers found the car on King Avenue driving at a high rate of speed. Officers lost sight of the car, but later found it abandoned near John Street.

Ross Township police found the car along John Street and called for a K-9 unit, who tracked Gusty from the car and found him hiding behind a house.

“I know there’s crime that happens every place, it did happen a little bit close to my house this time,” said neighbor Roy Peterson. “I was a little bit concerned.”

When he was arrested, police said Gusty had 58 stamp bags of heroin on him.

Gusty was taken to the Allegheny County Jail on charges including resisting arrest and driving on a suspended license.
