HEMPFIELD TOWNSHIP, Pa. — A man was arrested Friday morning after police surrounded a home near an elementary school in Hempfield Township.
Officials said it is believed the man had a shotgun at the home on McCabe Drive, which is located across from Maxwell Elementary School. The incident was reported shortly before 8 a.m., as kids were heading to school.
Police could be heard over a loudspeaker asking the man to come out of the home.
“All we hear was, ‘Come out with your hands up,’ and there was cops all around with their guns drawn. We didn’t know what was going on,” Mary Beth Moore, a neighbor, said.
The man was arrested shortly before 9 a.m.
The school messaged parents to tell them a bus wasn’t going to pick up their kids and they should instead be dropped off.
