Demetrius Coleman had a motion hearing Wednesday and is in the Allegheny County Jail as he awaits his next court appearance.
One year later, an angel, a teddy bear and three white roses with a message saying "you will be remembered always" adorn the light post along Lincoln Highway in North Versailles.
The crash at the intersection of Routes 30 and 49 in North Versailles killed David Bianco, Kailey Meininger and their 2-year-old daughter Annika.
They were in the intersection and couldn't avoid the collision.
Investigators say it started with a traffic stop in East McKeesport, after they say Coleman made an illegal U-turn.
When officers asked him for his license, he told them he didn't have one, investigators said.
Police searched his name and found an arrest warrant for a probation violation on prior drug charges.
Police say Coleman sped off, weaving across four lanes of traffic on Route 30, before hitting two other cars.

At certain points, he crossed over into oncoming traffic and crashed into the car carrying David, Kaylie and Annika, according to police.
Coleman's trial is scheduled for March 6, 2018.
