PITTSBURGH — A man is in critical condition after police said he carjacked a vehicle and later crashed into a dumpster truck near the West End Circle Saturday morning.
According to police, the suspect -- who was identified as a man in his early 30s -- entered a 7-11 store in Ingram shortly before 2 a.m. Saturday and told the clerk he had a gun and wanted money. The clerk refused to hand over any cash and the man ran out. After leaving the store, the man confronted someone else, fought them and then stole the gold sedan.
Police said the man is believed to have committed two other robberies in Bellevue and Hampton Township before he was driving inbound on West Carson Street and he struck the dumpster truck head-on around 9:20 a.m.
A van was also hit during the crash, but investigators said the drivers of that van and the truck were not injured.
Emergency responders had to cut the suspected carjacker out of the wreckage, and he was rushed to the hospital in critical condition.
HAZMAT vehicles were called briefly to the scene because there was a fuel leak from the truck. West Carson Street has been closed in both directions for hours.
Police are still investigating the incident and treating it as a crime scene. It’s unclear what charges will be filed against the suspect at this time.
