Man dead after running portable gas generator in basement of Washington County home

WASHINGTON COUNTY, Pa. — A man was found dead following a power outage at his Washington County home.

According to the Washington County Coroner’s Office, Jeffrey McClay, 60, was found dead in his home along Covered Bridge Road in Prosperity on Thursday morning.

Investigators said the power went out sometime last evening and McClay was using a portable gasoline-powered generator in his basement.

The coroner’s office said it believes McClay died from carbon monoxide poisoning.

Officials are reminding people to never use gas-powered generators inside homes and enclosed spaces.
