PETERS TOWNSHIP, Pa. — A Canonsburg man died Monday night after he was hit by an SUV in Peters Township, the Washington County coroner said Tuesday.

Richard Bryan Baurle, 45, was struck shortly before 8 p.m. on Washington Road, the coroner said.

TRENDING NOW:

Peters Township police Chief Douglas Grimes said he doesn't know why this Baurle was attempting to cross this very busy intersection in the dark Monday night.

There are crosswalks about 100 yards in either direction.

Workers who heard sirens and saw flashing lights came running out of the Waterdam Centre Plaza Monday night.

Baurle was hit and killed.

Police said the driver who hit him stopped, waited for first responders and was extremely distraught.

Workers today said the highway is not lit and it was already dark at the time of the accident.

Investigators say Baurle was likely leaving a business in this plaza, possibly a restaurant, when he crossed the busy four-lane highway.

Baurle lived just a few blocks away, and was likely walking home.

He died at Canonsburg Hospital.

Grimes said he doesn't believe there will be any charges filed in this case, but they are still investigating.
