Man shot near popular restaurant overlooking downtown Pittsburgh

PITTSBURGH — A man was hospitalized in critical condition following an early-morning shooting in Pittsburgh’s Duquesne Heights neighborhood.

Pittsburgh police were called to the 1400 block of Grandview Avenue just after 3 a.m. Wednesday.

Officers had the area outside Monterey Bay Fish Grotto, a restaurant that overlooks downtown Pittsburgh, taped off for several hours while they combed the area for evidence.

Police said the man was shot multiple times.

“It’s just awful, just awful,” Jennette Norbut said of the shooting.

Norbut lives nearby and walks right by where it happened every day.

“Of course, it’s in the daytime, but still you see people at night as well and it’s always safe,” she said. “This is really the first incident I know of over here.”

Late Wednesday afternoon, police said they had arrested Neil Toalston in connection with the shooting.

A criminal complaint states Toalston told investigators that the victim, Jason Connolly, was swinging a back at him and he feared for his safety. Toalston told police he fired two warning shots into the ground at Connolly’s feet but that he wouldn’t stop approaching. That’s when Toalston said he fired at Connolly and hit him in the chest, stomach, thigh, arm and leg.

Security camera footage from the restaurant showed Toalston and Connolly to be an estimated 10 feet apart when the shots were fired.

Court documents said since Toalston’s address could not be verified, he was considered a flight risk and was arrested.
