NEW CASTLE, Pa. — A man died after police arrested him in New Castle on Sunday.
Numerous calls had been made to 911 around 3:30 a.m. about a man screaming and acting erratically, police said. The man had also allegedly assaulted someone after breaking into and burglarizing a home on East Washington Street.
When officers located 34-year-old Albert Beckworth-Thompson, he was on Adams Street. He shouted that he had been drugged by his girlfriend and questioned whether the officers were “real officers,” according to New Castle police.
Beckworth-Thompson resisted arrest and ran from the officers as they tried to get him into their custody so he could be taken to a hospital, police said. Officers quickly caught up with him and again tried to arrest him, but he struggled and was tased by the two officers.
After Beckworth-Thompson was handcuffed, he began to go in and out of consciousness, police said. The officers called for an ambulance and began CPR.
Beckworth-Thompson was pronounced dead at a hospital.
One officer was hurt during the arrest, police said.
Pennsylvania State Police will conduct an investigation in consultation with the Lawrence County District Attorney’s Office.
