Man’s plea changed to guilty but mentally ill, sentenced up to 30 years in prison for beating death

PITTSBURGH — A man will spend up to the next 30 years in state prison in connection with beating death of a Pittsburgh man.

Marlon Johnson appeared before a judge last year and pleaded guilty to one count of 3rd degree murder in the 2020 beating death of Roger Brown. On Tuesday, a judge changed Johnson’s plea to guilty but mentally ill.

He sentenced Johnson to 14 to 30 years in state prison.

Brown was found bleeding on a sidewalk in Pittsburgh’s Homewood neighborhood in June 2020. He had severe head trauma and was taken to the hospital in critical condition where he died.
