PITTSBURGH — Multiple law enforcement sources told Target 11′s Rick Earle that as many as 50 Pittsburgh police officers were out because of COVID-19.
City officials declined to release the exact numbers, but sources said it is between 30 and 50 officers.
Officials with the Department of Public Safety sent Channel 11 a statement:
“COVID numbers are obviously spiking all over the globe and affected every industry. Public Safety continues to help its personnel who are affected by the virus and we use all available resources to serve the communities we are entrusted to protect.”
Last year, two officers died from COVID-19 complications. About 70% of the department is fully vaccinated.
The Pittsburgh Firefighters Union said it is seeing a slight uptick in cases, but so far officials are not overly concerned.
