PITTSBURGH — Pittsburgh Mayor Bill Peduto plans to introduce local-level hate crime laws that go a step further than current state laws.
According to our partners at TribLive.com, the new bill would protect sexual orientation, gender identity and disability. State law limits how strong local laws can be, limiting the level of charges to similar to a traffic ticket.
“What we’re doing is taking a stand against hate in our city,” said Peduto’s chief of staff, Dan Gilman.
