McDonald residents blame construction for constant flooding

MCDONALD, Pa. — People living in McDonald called Channel 11 to show us water pouring into their homes, which they say is because of a turnpike project.

Neighbors say the flooding in their yards and basements has gotten worse since nearby highway construction began.

People living off McDonald Road, Route 980, say lately there’s been flooding every week.

“The cones was floating down the road, tires in the yard, floated away toys, it's the worst I've ever seen it,” said Shawnee Boyer, who's lived there for two years.

She says the water Tuesday night was higher than her washer and dryer in the basement and she's worried about her grandkids playing in the yard.

“It's not going to be safe with all the floodwater coming through,” Boyer said.

“(It’s) like a river coming through here,” William Stewart said. “(The) cellar’s full of water, garage, holes in the yard. It was quite a mess.”

He says he won't even go back into his house, concerned it could be electrified and have damage to the foundation.

He, and other neighbors believe new construction along Route 980 where the new Southern Beltway of the Pennsylvania Turnpike is being built is a factor.

Channel 11 reached out to the Turnpike Commission, but have not yet heard back.
