PITTSBURGH — Smack dab in the middle of East Carson Street on the South Side is an empty storefront next to several restaurants. On the door is a permit application for a proposed medical marijuana dispensary on the first floor.

The applicant's attorney told Channel 11 they are hopeful the dispensary can be up and running within a year.

The building itself has several large windows in front, which a nearby worker said could pose a problem with the late night bar life in the South Side.

"The crime does get pretty crazy over here on this side of town, so they might want to reconsider, especially right on the main street," said Aaron Lewis, who works a few doors down.
That's where most of the trouble is on East Carson."

So far, there is no word on what the hours would be if the permit is granted.

The applicant's attorney told Channel they are keeping the applicant confidential for now, but they said it is a licensed medical marijuana permit holder. That means they have already received the OK from the state to pursue a dispensary in Southwestern Pennsylvania.

The next step is a zoning hearing on Nov. 14. If that goes well, there are a number of other hearings down the line.
