More than 4,600 people hospitalized in Pa. from COVID-19, 180 new deaths reported

PITTSBURGH — The Pa. Department of Health reported 5,676 new cases of coronavirus in the state Tuesday, while 4,631 people are currently hospitalized.

The health department said there were 180 new deaths from COVID-19 statewide as well, and 970 patients are in the ICU with severe cases.

Most of the patients hospitalized are ages 65 or older, and most of the deaths have occurred in patients 65 or older, according to officials.

The health department said out of 375,888 tests given over the past week, only 32,853 have come back positive -- a positivity rate of about 8.7%, which is significantly lower than the state’s previous mark.

There were 603 new COVID-19 cases and five new deaths reported Tuesday in Allegheny County.

According to the Allegheny County Health Department, 466 of the new cases are confirmed cases from 1,614 tests. The remaining 137 cases are probable cases.

New cases range in age from 5 months to 97 years, with a median age of 43 years. The dates of positive tests were from Nov. 15 to Nov. 30. Six tests were more than a week old.

The five new deaths were two people in their 60s, two people in their 70s and one person in their 90s. They died between Nov. 18 and Nov. 29.

Since March 14, there have been 29,007 cases of COVID-19 in Allegheny County residents, 2,083 hospitalizations and 514 deaths.
