National art exhibit collects photos in Pittsburgh to spark immigration and citizenship debate

PITTSBURGH — The Second Lady of Pennsylvania came together with a nationwide art project designed to urge legislators to pass a pathway to citizenship.

Gisele Fetterman joined the “Inside Out 11M” project Sunday in Market Square, to provide immigration advocates, local leaders and community members with a unique platform to amplify their voices in urging Congress to enact legislation this fall to create a pathway to citizenship for millions of immigrants who call America home.

The initiative was launched by the award-winning artist JR, to create a portrait of America that includes immigrants and the descendants of immigrants alike.

During the stop, participants were given an opportunity to take their pictures and join thousands of others nationwide who have used art as an expression of standing in solidarity with millions of immigrants. Murals were then installed throughout the afternoon at The Pittsburgh Cultural Trust and Smithfield Liberty Parking Garage.

“Inside Out 11M” is on a national, 16-city tour, including Phoenix, Denver, Detroit, Milwaukee, and Washington, D.C. Over the past decade, more than 400,000 people spanning 138 countries have participated in the Inside Out Project. The project has been on every continent, with over 2,000 actions created that have centered on various social justice topics.
