PITTSBURGH — Pittsburgh Public Schools Police are asking to be armed, making a push for it at a meeting Monday night.

The district’s police chief delivered a presentation about why officers should be armed after a school board policy workshop session.

The chief, along with an expert in firearms law, argued that the district’s officers have the proper training and should be permitted to carry in order to protect students if there were ever an active shooter situation.

Meanwhile, an American Civil Liberties Union representative argued that officers should not be able to carry in schools, which should instead aim to improve the quality of student support resources and relationships between students and adults.

In July, the school board passed a resolution opposing legislation that would allow teachers and support staff to carry guns.
