MONROEVILLE — It’s been an ongoing project for 50 years, but the last leg of the $2.2 billion Mon-Fayette Expressway has cleared a big hurdle.
Monday night, officials voted to continue to expand the expressway. Officials said the Turnpike Commission set aside $1.6 million for the 14-mile stretch. The money couldn’t be used for anything else, so if officials didn’t use it for the expressway, the money would go to another project in a different part of the state.
The last stretch of the expressway is expected to be complete by 2025. The road will run from Route 51 in Jefferson Hills, pass through East Pittsburgh and North Versailles, and then link Interstate 376 to Interstate 68 near Morgantown, West Virginia.

The Southwestern Pennsylvania Commission voted to go through with the project three months after the project was put on hold. Washington County Commissioner Larry Maggi, who is SPC vice chairman, said he believes it will be great to have better access to the Mon Valley.
“It will run from Monroeville all the way down to (Washington) D.C. It will be a straight connection, so it will be good for the whole region,” Maggi said.
