Family questions fatal shooting of man by police

A family is searching for answers after they say their loved one was shot and killed by Pittsburgh police early Sunday morning.

They're saying that there has to be more to the story and they're demanding police tell them what happened in the moments before and after Mark Daniels, 39, was shot.

“You could at least tell me if he's OK. Breathing or something, please,” said Daniels’ mother, Joyce. “It's inhumane for you to let parents sit there all these hours and don't tell them.”

Police say just after 1:15 a.m., police encountered a man acting suspiciously near Brushton Avenue and Bennett Street.

They say that man fired at officers and then fled, but not before officers fired back, striking him.

The officers eventually tracked him down behind a residence and then he was transported to a hospital, where he died.

"Something's going on. How you gonna whiz him away to the coroner's office and I don't know?” Joyce Daniels said. “Somebody gotta tell me something. Somebody better tell me something. There's a cover-up."

Family members are distraught because they say they've been told nothing.

"We're getting mixed-up stories, because first it was he came, they were performing surgery,” said Sequaha Jeffries, Mark Daniels’ sister. “We were told that he was pronounced dead at the scene –actually, they were trying to perform CPR, so everything is just questionable.

“Where was this gun that he supposedly had on him? Was it fired? We want to know all of this. It has to be uncovered."

Allegheny County Police are investigating the shooting. If anyone has information, they're asked to call the county police tipline at 833-255-8477.
