PENN HILLS, Pa. — The man responsible for saving another man’s life in a Penn Hills house fire is back to his day job. In fact, he immediately went back to work after being called an angel.

Only Channel 11 obtained exclusive video that shows the rescue.

“He was like an angel,” said Angela Spynda. “Like an angel from somewhere.”

“Awe,” said Ken Andreen. “I’m not an angel. I was just in the right place at the right time.”

Angela Spynda calls Ken Andreen an angel because he ran into a burning house and carried a man out on his shoulders. Spynda’s doorbell camera captured everything.

“The door was open,” said Andreen. I pushed it open, and I yelled for him.”

Andreen heard someone say hello and moved toward the voice.

“Found him sleeping on the sofa and picked him up,” said Andreen. “Threw him on my shoulder and out the door we went. God put me in the right place at the right time.”

Every Thursday morning, Andreen drives to the Penn Hills neighborhood to deliver meals. That was what put him in the right place at the right time to save a man from his burning home on Old Barn Drive.

“I didn’t think about myself either,” said Andreen.

Instead, he thought about a man he didn’t know — 45-year-old Carsten Molt. Medics took Molt to UPMC Mercy’s burn unit, where they treated and released him the same day.

“I’m OK,” said Molt. “I have a sore throat, but otherwise OK.”

Firefighters say if it wasn’t for Andreen, we’d be talking about a very different outcome and Molt knows that.

“He’s really a hero,” said Molt. “Probably would have perished otherwise. I just want to thank him and at some point and meet him.”

“Yeah, I’d like to meet him someday,” said Andreen. “Give him a hug and see how he’s doing. That’s all.”

The cause of the fire is still under investigation, but the Penn Hills Fire Marshal believes it was an electrical fire.
