PA Lottery officials warn customers of possible schemes

HARRISBURG, Pa. — The Pennsylvania Lottery issued a warning to customers Thursday about ways to avoid potential schemes.

Officials said customers need to watch out for emails, phone calls, text and social media messages from people posing as lottery employees.

Customers should be aware of a new telephone scheme that mentions Mega Millions and a scheme on Facebook mentioning the Powerball, officials said.

The schemes involved people who are posing as claim agents and offering a badge number to make themselves sound official. Some will use social media, and will claim to be a lottery employee or pose as someone on your friend’s list, officials said.

Because most of these schemes are based out of the country, it’s difficult for them to be prosecuted by U.S. law enforcement.
