WEST MIFFLIN, Pa. — Parents are concerned about the possible closure of New Emerson Elementary School in West Mifflin.
Before public comment even began at Thursday night's school board meeting, district officials laid out the reasons why the school may close.
One of the biggest issues is declining enrollment.

School officials said they would probably be closing two buildings if it wasn't for students who come from Duquesne.
Another issue is finances.
District officials said spending goes up every year due to rising costs of health care and other expenses.
If New Emerson closes, students will go to Homeville Elementary, which is a little more than two miles away from Emerson.
District officials said the closing would save the school district hundreds of thousands of dollars.
The district has 90 days to make a decision.
