Part of Pennsylvania Turnpike closed this weekend for bridge removal

PITTSBURGH — A section of the Pennsylvania turnpike will be closed for five hours Saturday into Sunday so crews can remove a bridge.

Starting 11:59 p.m. Saturday through 6 a.m. on Sunday, the turnpike will be closed from the Allegheny Valley exit to the Pittsburgh exit.

During the closure, crews will remove the original Unity Trestle Road bridge which carried traffic over the Turnpike at milepost 52.36 in Plum Borough.

The new bridge was constructed beside the existing bridge and was opened to traffic in Nov. 2020.

During this bridge removal drivers will be asked to use the following suggested detour:

EASTBOUND TRAFFIC Exiting at Allegheny Interchange:

  • Freeport Road to
  • PA State Route 910 west to
  • PA State Route 28 south to
  • I-579 south/Veterans Bridge to
  • I-376 east to PA Turnpike (Exit 85)
  • Re-enter I-76 at the Pittsburgh Interchange.

WESTBOUND TRAFFIC Exiting at Pittsburgh Interchange:

I-376 west to

I-279 north/Ft. Duquesne Bridge to

PA State Route 28 north to

PA State Route 910 east (Exit 11, Harmarville)

Left onto Freeport Road

Re-enter I-76 at the Allegheny Valley Interchange.

During the closure, expect higher traffic volumes on detour roads. Message boards will be in place to inform customers of the closure.

Once the roadway is opened to traffic, a single lane will be in place 11 a.m. on Mar. 28.
