WEATHER UPDATES: Washington Boulevard reopens after being closed for flooding concerns

KENNEDY TOWNSHIP, Pa. — Flooded roads and landslides are starting to be reported across the Pittsburgh area. We’re keeping you up-to-date with live updates below.

UPDATE 5/8/22 12:30 p.m.: Washington Blvd has been fully reopened.

UPDATE 9:45 p.m.: Washington Boulevard will now remain closed between Allegheny River Boulevard and Negley Run Boulevard through Monday due to potential flooding.

UPDATE 6:12 p.m.:

UPDATE 5:16 p.m.: PennDOT announced further traffic closures in the Pittsburgh area.

Route 48 between Cool Springs Road in White Oak Borough and Old Long Run Road in McKeesport are closed dur to flooding. Nearby, Ripple Road (Route 2118) was closed between Long Run Road and Stepanik Road. Both of these closures were due to flooding.

Geyer Road (Route 4002) in Reserve and Shaler townships were also closed. This closure was also due to flooding.

Allegheny River Blvd. on Route 130 was closed at the intersection of Sandy Creek Road in Penn Hills was also closed due to flooding.

Another part of Allegheny River Blvd. (Route 130) was closed near Nadine Road due to a landslide.

The final update stated that Church Hollow Road between McVicker Lane Bunola River Road in Forward Township were also closed because of a landslide.

UPDATE 4:00 p.m. Pittsburgh Public Safety announced that Washington Boulevard will remain CLOSED UNTIL SUNDAY due to the continuous rain in the forecast.

UPDATE 3:25 p.m.: Reserve VFD tweeted this photo of Geyer Road. They say the road is closed due to flooding and hillside movement.

UPDATE 3:20 p.m.: Channel 11′s Gabriella DeLuca is at the intersection of Washington Boulevard and Allegheny River Boulevard where the flood gates are down. From where she is, there doesn’t appear to be standing water on the road.

UPDATE 3:10 p.m.: Channel 11 arrived on scene in Shaler and found Geyer Road closed. A very small amount of water running across the road.

UPDATE 2:58 p.m.: Crews are on the scene of a reported landslide in the 1500 block of Spring Garden Avenue in Spring Garden.

UPDATE 2:36 p.m.: Shaler Township Police have announced that Geyer Road is closed between Wynee Street and Mt. Troy Road as a result of roadway flooding.


UPDATE 2:20 p.m.: The Pittsburgh Parking Authority announced that the Mon Wharf will be closed on Monday in advance of the rising waters expected through the weekend. The Ohio River is forecast to surpass 18′ by mid-day Saturday and crest at 21.1′ Sunday morning.

UPDATE 2:15 p.m.: Pittsburgh Public Safety is reporting that the flood gates along Washington Boulevard have been lowered and the road has been closed due to rising waters.

UPDATE 2:10 p.m.: A partial landslide has occurred in Kennedy Township.

Allegheny County first responders received a call about the landside at 1:38 p.m. The landslide occurred at the intersection of Route 51 and Ewing Road.

PennDOT crews have been notified of the incident.
