Pennsylvania reports over 14% positivity rate, thousands hospitalized from COVID-19

PITTSBURGH — The Pennsylvania Department of Health confirmed there were 14,960 new coronavirus cases over the past two days.

As of Monday morning, 5,300 people are hospitalized with COVID-19 -- and 1,107 of those patients are currently in the ICU. Most of the patients hospitalized are 65 or older.

Health officials reported 111 new deaths since Saturday across the state, bringing Pa.’s total to 11,373 since the pandemic began.

There were 1,470 new COVID-19 cases and four new deaths reported over the last 48 hours in Allegheny County.

The Allegheny County Health Department said Monday that 1,461 of the new cases are confirmed cases from 4,661 tests. The remaining nine cases are probable cases.

New cases range in age from 1 week to 102 years, with a median age of 46 years. The dates of positive tests were from May 28 to Dec. 6. There were 24 tests that were more than a week old, one of which was from May.

The four deaths were two people in their 60s, one person in their 70s and one person in their 90s. One death was associated with a long-term care facility. The dates of death ranged from Dec. 5 to Dec. 6.

Since March 14, there have been 34,121 cases of COVID-19 in Allegheny County residents, 2,247 hospitalizations and 579 deaths.

Statewide, the Pa. Department of Health said the positivity rate from Nov. 27 through Dec. 3 increased to 14.4% -- and all but one county in Pa. is under “substantial transmission” status. Only Cameron County, the state’s least populated county, was in the low level of transmission.

As of Dec. 3, the state has seen a seven-day case increase of 48,668 cases, which is 5,955 more new cases across Pa. over the past week compared to the previous week.
