PITTSBURGH — On Tuesday, an alert went out on Spartan Pharmacy’s Facebook page that it had dozens of open appointments and vaccine doses available. They were offering the shots to anyone over the age of 18. It wasn’t long before their call to get shots in arms was answered.
Adam Rice, the owner of the pharmacy, said he noticed a surplus of doses for their Tuesday event. He said the news spread like wildfire.
“We have to follow the laws and the rules and regulations accordingly but not to spite ourselves and sacrifice any vaccine,” Rice said. “I’ve never done anything like this before. I’ve never had such response and satisfaction.”
Within minutes, people were jumping at the chance.
“A lot of us miss our freedom, especially leaving high school, going to college and then being stuck in an apartment or dorm,” Pitt student Ben Sauls said. “It’s tough for the mental health. Getting vaccinated will be the fastest way to get our freedom back.”
Sauls said he and his friends didn’t hesitate to sign up to get the vaccine.
As for Rice and his pharmacy, he said he’s ready to meet the accelerated demand in the coming weeks as more people are eligible to get the vaccine.
