HARRISBURG, Pa. — PIAA officials issued new guidance for resuming winter sports in Pennsylvania and officials expect sports to resume on Jan. 4.
According to a news release, the board said schools needed to have 10 days of practice before any competition. If schools already started, they need a combination of 10 practices. Schools that completed a preseason, including those that already played a game, must have a minimum of four practices to resume play. Five practices are needed before the first scrimmage unless six or more preseason practices have been completed. In that case, only four practices are needed before any game or scrimmage.
For sports like swimming, bowling, rifle and girls’ gymnastics, five days of practice are required before any competition. This applies to schools where an off-campus facility is required.
Virtual practices are not allowed and a school may not shorten days of practice before a game by hosting more than one practice in a given day.
In addition, the board voted to postpone the Team Wrestling Championship to a date to be determined following the individual championships. The agency said this change accommodates schools by allowing more weeks for competition during the regular season.
