PIAA suspends extracurricular activities after new coronavirus restrictions

The Pennsylvania Interscholastic Athletic Association has suspended all extracurricular activities after Gov. Wolf announced new statewide restrictions to try to curb the rising tide of Covid-19 infections.

“PIAA is committed to maximizing the athletic opportunities for all student-athletes across the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania,” said PIAA President Frank Majikes. “The board will continue to meet and monitor this every-changing pandemic and its implication on schools and their communities.”

Wolf on Thursday announced new mitigation efforts, including the suspension of all K-12 sports, youth sports and extracurricular activities. The changes take place at midnight and run until 8 a.m. on Jan. 4.

PIAA officials said they hope the temporary suspension will help flatten the curve and allow sports to resume in January.

“We all collectively must be diligent in following mitigation efforts in order for a successful return to the season,” the organization said in a release.

Latrobe School District is just one of the district’s in the region forced to adapt. The district’s basketball and swimming programs will be getting in one match before the season is suspended for the next three weeks.

“The one thing about this is the entire state is in the same boat. This is it, we’re all in this together. I’ll you every day but I didn’t realize how many athletes this is happening to for the second time and that’s where it’s mentally wearing on them,” Athletic Director Mark Mears said.
