Pitt students returning to campus housing required to shelter-in-place for 2 weeks

PITTSBURGH — Students returning to campus housing at the University of Pittsburgh will be required to shelter-in-place for two weeks: seven days prior to coming to campus and seven days once on campus.

This is just the latest development as Pitt officials work to keep everyone safe while kicking off the fall semester. Students begin moving in on Aug. 11.

According to the notice posted on the school’s website, the example was given that students moving in on Aug. 13 would need to shelter-in-place at home starting Aug. 6 and on campus until Aug. 20. Depending on their arrival date, some students may begin classes remotely during their shelter-in-place period and then be allowed to join in-person classes once that time has passed.

University officials said up to 400 students per day will be selected for COVID-19 testing to help “monitor the prevalence of the virus on our campuses before in-person classes even begin.” 24-hour testing will also be available for any student experiencing symptoms of coronavirus.

There are isolation facilities prepared at each Pitt campus. Students showing symptoms will be able to live in these facilities for up to two weeks separated from others.

Pitt students said moving in will be an adjustment, but they’re ready.

“We just want to have a normal senior year like everyone else. Obviously, it’s kind of out of our control at this point, so just trying to stay positive thinking about the things we will be able to do instead of the things we can’t,” Melanie Wetzel, a Pitt senior, said.
