PITTSBURGH — The wealthiest ZIP codes in the Pittsburgh metropolitan area include some of the same places every year — so how much do they really change?
Quite a bit, actually. Look no farther than Downtown Pittsburgh — 15222 — which was in the bottom third among ZIP codes in the region by income a decade ago and now ranks 12th.
We took a look at the current 15 wealthiest ZIPs in the region and compared what they look like now — in terms of income and population — with what they were like in 2010, using Census data. ZIP codes with populations of at least 1,000 were included. All but one of these places have gotten richer, and some considerably more than others. Eleven of the 15 gained in population during this span, despite the region as a whole seeing population declines.
