Pittsburgh to host more than 75 movies, concerts and activities this summer

PITTSBURGH — More than 75 movies, concerts and dances will fill Pittsburgh parks this summer.

City of Pittsburgh Office of Special Events has announced its lineup of happenings. The Dollar Bank Cinema in the Park will show films at 10 locations in July and August.

Guests are asked to bring a chair or blanket.

The first movie to kick off the season will be “Pokemon Detective Pikachu.” The PG-rated film will be shown at dusk on Monday at McBride Park in Lincoln Place, which will also host a movie on Aug. 2.

These events usually start in June but with the pandemic restrictions not being lifted until May, the city needed some additional planning time.

The events are free.

Oakland’s Schenley Plaza will have movie nights on Sundays beginning July 11 through Aug. 22.

On July 12 and Aug. 9, catch films at Chartiers Playground in Chartiers City.

In Highland Park on Reservoir Drive, there will be movie nights on July 26 and Aug. 23.

The West End Overlook in Elliott will show films on Tuesdays July 6 through Aug. 24.

At Schenley Park on Flagstaff Hill, there will be films Wednesdays starting July 7 through Aug. 25.

Beginning July 8, Brookline Memorial Park will host movies on Thursdays through Aug. 26.

Arsenal Park in Lawrenceville will show movies on Fridays beginning July 8 through Aug. 27.

On Mt. Washington, Grandview Park has movies on Saturdays beginning July 10 through Aug. 28.

Riverview Park on Observatory Hill will have movies on Saturdays, beginning July 10 through Aug. 28.

Also on Observatory Hill, the “Stars at Riverview Jazz Series” will be held Saturdays beginning July 10 through Aug. 28 from 7 to 8:30 p.m. The opening concert will be the Reggie Watkins Quartet.

The “Bach, Beethoven and Brunch Concert Series” returns on Sundays, beginning July 11 through Aug. 8. The event begins at 10:30 a.m. in Mellon Park located on Fifth Avenue in Shadyside. The Aeolian Winds of Pittsburgh will be the opening act.

Also on Sundays, the “Reservoir of Jazz Concert Series” begins on Aug. 1, running through Aug. 29, from 5 p.m. to 7 p.m. in Highland Park at Highland Avenue and Reservoir Drive. Funky Fly Project will be the opening act.

Summer Soul Line Dancing” will be taught by Roland Ford from 7 to 9 p.m. Sundays starting Aug. 1-29 at the entrance to Highland Park.
