Pittsburgh man helping more people out of Ukraine after rescuing 36 children

PITTSBURGH — A Pittsburgh man is helping more people get out of Ukraine after already rescuing 36 children with the help of a priest.

Allen Sherwood went back into Ukraine over the weekend to get more people to safety.

“A friend of a friend called me and asked me if I could get his parents, and we ended up meeting up with them yesterday, pulled them out. We actually spent the night in Lviv, and right now we’re at the border crossing,” Sherwood said Monday morning.

Sherwood said that once it was safe, he called the total stranger who’s friends with his friend to tell him that he had their parents.

“His parents were crying and, obviously, he was crying on the phone. Then the driver starts crying, then my interpreter started crying. You know, I don’t even understand the language, but I can understand love,” Sherwood said.

This was just his latest mission. For more than a week, Sherwood has been in Europe, crossing into and out of Ukraine to rescue as many people as he can.

He and a Pittsburgh priest, Fr. Jason Charron from Holy Trinity Ukrainian Catholic Church, got 36 children, including 22 orphans, to safety, along with six adults.

Sherwood isn’t done yet. He said he’s now working on getting two 18-year-old women, both with children, across the border.
