Pittsburgh police officers put on leave after failing drug testing

PITTSBURGH — Channel 11 has learned that two Pittsburgh Police officers were put on administrative leave after they reportedly failed drug testing.

Sources told Channel 11 it is extremely rare for officers to fail drug testing.

According to Chief Scott Schubert, one officer tested positive for marijuana during random drug testing. That individual was placed on paid disciplinary leave pending disciplinary action. Officials said Public Safety does not discuss the details of that discipline that is sought or rendered as per the department’s contract with the Fraternal Order of Police.

Sources said cocaine was found after another officer was tested.

Under the union contract, officers are tested if they fire a service weapon or if they’re involved in a vehicle accident. Officers in specialized units, like the SWAT team or Bomb Squad, are randomly tested twice a year. Officers can also be tested if there is reasonable suspicion that they may be under the influence.

This comes after a troubling few weeks for the department. Officials recommended firing six officers involved in the tasing of Jim Rogers. An officer in Zone 5 accused another officer of raping her as well.
