PITTSBURGH — Pittsburgh Public Schools unanimously approved its interim superintendent, Dr. Wayne Walters, Wednesday, following the resignation of Anthony Hamlet.
Hamlet, whose last day is Friday, submitted his resignation letter after the Pennsylvania State Ethics Commission found he violated ethics codes.

Hamlet will receive one year’s salary, plus the actual value of his benefits -- amounting to $399,687. This is because the terms of his contract, in accordance with the Pennsylvania School Code, “limits severance to no more than one year of salary and benefits if the contract had two or more years remaining -- whether there is a mutual agreement for a resignation or whether he is terminated at will.”
Dr. Wayne Walters previously was the Assistant Superintendent of Professional Development and Special Programming.
He has been the principal of Barack Obama Academy of International Students 6-12 since its inception in 2009. Pittsburgh Obama 6-12, located in the East Liberty community, is certified as an International Baccalaureate (IB) Middle Years Programme (grades 6-10) and a Diploma Programme (grades 11-12).

The incoming school board will direct the national search for a new superintendent beginning in December.
Prior to serving as principal of Pittsburgh Obama, Dr. Walters was principal of the Frick International Studies Academy 6-8 (2000-2008) and Assistant Principal of Northview Heights Elementary School (1999-2000). Dr. Walters joined the District in 1991 as teacher at King Elementary School.
“This is my life and what I love doing best. I feel so much passion for helping to change children’s lives through education as I reflect on so many educators who paved the way for me,” he said.
