Pittsburgh volunteers drive 3,000 miles to help dogs in Texas after winter storm

PITTSBURGH — Two volunteers for a Pittsburgh-based animal rescue organization drove 3,000 miles to help dogs in Texas.

No Dog Left Behind took its mission to a whole new level to help the dogs after the historic winter storm in Texas.

Dave Stash and Walt Schwarz are the two people who jumped in to help. They loaded a van and left Pittsburgh on Feb. 26, driving to Houston to pick up 16 dogs from two shelters.

The dogs needed a warm and safe place to stay after the shelters lost power.

They then drove another 12 hours to Atlanta to drop the dogs off at Best Friends Animal Society, where they will be cared for until they’re adopted.

“Just those two alone, just stopping everything. It just lets us know that the Pittsburgh people and the volunteers … if there is somebody in need, an animal in need, it doesn’t matter what they are doing, they are there,” Tiffany Decosmo, No Dog Left Behind operations manager, said.

Stash and Schwarz got back to Pittsburgh late Monday night.
