NORTH BRADDOCK, Pa. — A police chase that began in East Pittsburgh ended with the fleeing vehicle crashing into a telephone pole early Wednesday morning outside a home in North Braddock.
Police said the chase, which reached speeds of 100 mph, started as an attempted traffic stop on Bessemer Avenue on suspicion that the vehicle had been stolen. The vehicle also had a broken window.
"Was just watching TV and what we thought we heard was a car crash, basically," said a neighbor who did not want to be identified. "We seen a young man running down the hill and the police chasing after him. I did see one cop with his gun drawn, and he was chasing after him, but there was a lot of cops out here."
Authorities are searching for three men who were in the vehicle. Police said it is believed they started jumping out of the vehicle before the crash.
The vehicle sustained significant front-end damage after slamming into the pole and a nearby fence at about 12:30 a.m. on Bell Avenue. The pole was sheared and leaning before being replaced later Wednesday.
