Man arrested in connection with several stabbings along Pittsburgh street

PITTSBURGH — The man accused in multiple stabbings in Pittsburgh’s Lincoln-Lemington-Belmar neighborhood over the weekend is behind bars.

Police said Melvin Banks is responsible for at least three stabbings within a 24-hour time span on the same street.

Pittsburgh police were called to a convenience store on Lincoln Avenue Saturday night after a store clerk was stabbed in the face. The attack happened fast, within a three-second time frame. The clerk was rushed to the hospital in critical condition.

A little further down Lincoln Avenue, police found 37-year-old Gregory Walker’s lifeless body at the parking lot entrance to apartments. Banks stabbed Walker at least nine times, police said.

Walker’s brother tells Channel 11 that Gregory was disabled and had a kind heart. He was soft-spoken and wanted nothing more in life but to please and help others.

Police believe Banks stabbed another person on Sunday along the same street. They are expected to survive.

“I found out later than most. But when I found out he was arrested; I was just glad he’s off the streets, you know,” Pittsburgh resident Denzel Horne said.

Banks is facing several charges, including criminal homicide, aggravated assault and criminal attempted homicide.

Banks is set to face a judge on July 17 for his preliminary hearing.
