Police respond to senior community after complaints

WAMPUM, Pa. — Police are investigating complaints made about a senior living community.

Friday morning, police were called in because no workers were there to assist the residents.

Channel 11 has been contacted about this facility for months, but went there when Pennsylvania State Police were called.

Kataras Cove is a personal care and secure dementia facility in Wampum, Beaver County.

When Channel 11 showed up Friday afternoon, there were two state trooper vehicles and several family members taking their loved ones out of the facility.

Troopers were called to the state run senior care home when a client called to say there were no employees there to care for them.

Channel 11 took that allegation straight to the owner, who said residents were there alone for 20 minutes.

"That can't happen, not at all," Lynn Katekovich said. "We've been open since 1998 and it's never happened. We need to get better staffing, obviously this is uncalled for."

Family members, Pennsylvania State Police and the Pennsylvania Department of Human Services are all aware of the situation.

DHS told Channel 11 they are aware of the staffing situation at Katara's Kove.

The department is working with the facility owner and law enforcement to ensure the needs of the residents are being addressed and relocated to facilities that meet the individual's needs.

"It's an unfortunate thing that happened today," Katekovich said.

The Department of Health and Human Services told Channel 11 the personal care home has not been shut down, although PSP continue to investigate complaints and that the department will remain in close contact with the owner.
