Suspect in custody after shooting at Braddock officer

NORTH BRADDOCK, Pa. — Police have confirmed that the suspect accused of opening fire at a Braddock police officer during a traffic stop Tuesday afternoon in North Braddock has been taken into custody.

The person was taken into custody at an abandoned home on Lobinger Avenue after an hours-long standoff, after a K-9 unit tracked the suspect to the building.

Police said the suspect shot himself in the head and was taken to the hospital in grave condition.

The incident began around 1:45 p.m. in the 400 block of Sylvan Avenue after a man spun out his car into a yard. An officer saw a man get out of a crashed car there and run off. A responding Braddock Police officer found a man matching the driver’s description at 3rd street and Reeves Way. The man started shooting at the officer with a handgun and ran off.

The police vehicle was hit with bullets but the officer was not hurt.

A perimeter was then set up around the area where the man was seen running. Detectives encountered shoe prints in the snow leading to an abandoned structure in the 500 block of Lobinger Avenue. A single muffled gunshot was heard coming from the house.

SWAT officers and negotiators arrived on scene and surrounded the structure. Just before 4:30 p.m. the man was found inside with the gunshot wound.
