The Pony League World Series is a huge attraction for Washington, Pennsylvania this time of the year.
“One of the unique things about this event is it’s for 13- and 14-year-olds. Once you miss that chance and you turn 15, you can’t play; so we are excited to have it this year,” explained Nathan Voytek, chairman of the Pony League World Series.
As COVID-19 cases surge, however, it will be a little different this year.
“We’re not going to have international teams. It’s going to be a domestic series in Puerto Rico,” Voytek said.
Events kicked off Thursday with a fan fest at Dick’s Sporting Goods on one of the hottest days of the year, as a heat advisory is still in full effect.
“Dress cool, bring a towel. Dick’s, our partner, is going to have cooling towels for our fans, so we will make it work,” Voytek said.
In addition to the heat, heavy rain over the last couple of days is keeping workers busy as they prep the baseball field.
“We took quite a bit of hit (the) last couple days here rainwise, but we’ve been very lucky to have our volunteers here to put this thing back together,” he said.
