ALLEGHENY COUNTY, Pa. — Quaker Valley High School closed Tuesday after bed bugs were spotted on an article of clothing.

According to a post on the district’s Facebook page, a staff member spotted the blood-sucking bugs on a piece of clothing belonging to a high school student on Monday afternoon.

Out of an abundance of caution, students were asked to stay home on Tuesday, and exterminators were brought in to treat the facility.

At last check, the district planned to reopen the school on Wednesday, and there were no reports of other buildings being impacted.

A statement sent by the district reads in part “It is important to note that, according to the Allegheny County Health Department, bed bug infestations in schools are uncommon. It is more common that a few bed bugs will hitchhike to school from an infested home in clothing or backpacks.”
